Ballard: meaning "high village." Ballard is situated on the Corrib-facing side of Mount Gable. In ancient times in Ireland, extended families lived close together for security, support and the sharing of land. As years passed by, people had to leave the land to find work and Nature reclaimed its mountainside. John Joe Holleran, who was raised on this mountain, has taken the amazing leap and brought back some of that close-knit family atmosphere with this unusual development of two traditional stone-built cottages - in the same location and with the same stone as had been there for hundreds of years before.
The cottages are indeed special and yet are close to the local village, An Fháirche (Clonbur). Here you can enjoy the splendour of Irish life at its best..... the gentle solitude blends well with the high quality amenities close by.
As you sit by the large open firesides, you can almost hear again, the old men telling stories to pass the night, as they had once done. Or look out the window and count the 366 islands, where it is said that God made one for every day of the year. Imagine how the boats came from Galway to Coalpark Quay with provisions - in fact, in the night, you can see the distant lights of Galway, where the Steam-Ships used to leave for the Americas. On fine days, one can take a "Prochóg" outside (traditional picnics that the neighbours would have together to celebrate an occasion) by the old rock faces, sitting on the ancient heathers, listening to the past tell its tale.
